Background

The railways keep detailed information about stations, including information to meet DDA requirements, on National Rail.

traveline regions are preparing similar information for stations and interchanges elsewhere on the public transport network.  If this information proves to be an effective and sustainable contribution to meeting DDA requirements then it will be possible to integrate the information more seemlessly into journey planning systems and steamline the methods of updating the information.

How to create more records

Records should be created by the relevant local authority or the owner of a bus station. As a first stage it is recommended that authorities or bus operators only complete a couple of bus stations, enough to get experience of the approach being taken, to clarify any issues and to give feedback.

A list of the questions in csv format is available with default answers. If the line number positions are retained the results will fit directly into an html template.

After line 145 there is a table. The row headings are in rows 149-154. The entries for each platform, bay or stand are provided in the following lines and more lines should be added if more platforms need to be included. Surplus lines can be deleted.

Rather than leave responses blank please follow the convention being used in the rail knowledgebase and insert the phrase "Not yet supplied".

It is better to avoid the answer "not applicable", as this prompts the question "why is it not applicable?" which may only be deduced with reference to the answers to other quesions.

A NaPTAN code should be supplied for the bus station or interchange.  If available this should be the StopArea number, otherwise the code for Stop 1 or Stand A etc.

The NaPTAN point number can be put in the name for each stand, as can be found in the records for South Yorkshire. eg 370021633 Stand CP2

A postcode for the bus station or a nearby address will help find the address on mapping systems, and has been known to be requested by people with car navigation systems that are driving to meet someone off a bus!

If you have DDA information in an existing system it may be possible to transfer the content without too much difficulty. However it is likely a there will be gaps in the information that will need to be filled separately.

Feedback received so far

"A link to traintaxi.co.uk is useful as the list of taxis will probably be the same for the bus station if it has a rail station close to it. However the working of traintaxi is specific to the rail station so there could be confusion."

Response: Traintaxi have mapped to all valid bus stations, coach stations and coach stops in England, Scotland and Wales by ATCO code.

"Knowledgebase does not capture very well the degree of enclosure and comfort in the passenger environment"

"Do all bus stations have a full postal address?"
