Obtaining and using traveline data

Data Available

NaPTAN data, of all bus stops and stations in the UK, and the National Gazetteer of towns and villages, can be made available. They are subject to Crown Copyright. However, they can be downloaded without charge and used for the following purposes:

local authority or Central Government activities by a local authority, Government Department, Agency or a contractor working on behalf of such an authority, Government Department or Agency
public transport operators for the purposes of managing operations and providing information about services to public information systems
academic researchers for the purposes of research undertaken without commercial sponsorship
information system suppliers for the purposes of product development, or for the provision of public information products and services under contract to a local authority or a transport operator
any individual or organisation using public transport schedule data for accessibility planning purposes where the schedule data uses NaPTAN or NPTG codes

All other uses of this data must be subject to the procurement of a licence from the Department for Transport on payment of the appropriate fee. of these licence arrangements.

NPTDR data, an annual snapshot of timetable schedules for the whole of the UK, is now available under commercial licence to those who are working on projects whether they are inside or outside the public sector. Application form

The restrictions on use of this data, contained in the application form, say that the licensee shall not use the data to create a "public facing current journey planning service".

Public Sector Information

A system of Information Asset Registers is being encouraged by the Office of Public Sector Information.

OPSI run a data unlocking service where people can register their interest in public sector data. Wider access to NPTDR is one of datasets requested for unlocking and seeking support.

Showusabetterway

is an invitation by Government Cabinet office to the Free Our Data campaign to suggest imaginitive new uses for public sector data. Although the closing date has passed, new ideas still seem to be being accepted. The schemes, a number of which relate to public transport data, can be viewed and voted on at uservoice.
